MSI CX640–2nd Gen i7 + Nvidia Optimus

Affordable power computing from the 2nd Generation Intel Processor line-up continues with this new offering from the MSI concept store at Megamall.

What differentiates this i7 powerhouse from the Neo and Lenovo offerings is the inclusion of an Nvidia Optimus engine with a 1 GB GeForce GT520M. The design of the body shares characteristics with that of the Neo B5700 and the HP dv6-6001, it sure is a pretty popular choice for the body covering.

The CX640 has a 15.6” screen and an almost full keyboard with the numpad but if you look closely, some of the buttons that you normally find there are cramped into the top and looks a little out of proportion. Most of the ports are situated in the left side of the device emphasizing the clean upper right side for mouse use. The trackpad is highly tactile with the metal surface filled with a spiral pattern, it has a pretty good feel to it and the separate clickers are a plus for me. It took me a short while to figure out how to try and turn on the device because the button was at the right side, a little unorthodox for the MSI brand.

The package does not come with an operating system at its price point which suggests that a chunk of the cost can be attributed to the inclusion of the graphics chip. It carries 500GB of storage, 2GB RAM and has 1366×768 for its resolution.

As it is, I cant really tell if it would have heating issues; the vents seem to be very capable of proper heat dispersal. Coming in at 49,995, it sits comfortably in the middle of the i7 price range. This particular unit however doesn’t seem to have much exposure yet from retailers so if you’re interested in one, better pay a visit to the Megamall Cyberzone… their stocks do run out.
